CHAPTER 1:
My suitcase wheels left tracks in the snow. I stared up at the old house. This wasn’t really an old antique house for tourists to visit. It was an old house that had been converted to a drug and alcohol treatment center. I stood next to my parents glaring up at my new home.
“What do you think?”
“I think I’m going snow blind”
My mother let out a deep sigh. Lets just get inside then. I shrugged my shoulders and followed. I walked into the waiting room where a receptionist was sitting behind her desk reading a Danielle Steele romance novel. She had a smirk on her face as if somebody in the book was receiving some sort of sexual favor. Her glare quickly changed as she saw us standing in front of her. She quickly placed a bookmark covered with ginger faced cats into her novel.
“Name please”
I stood there and glared at the woman
My mom let out one of her famous sighs as she stepped up to the desk
“Lilly Black”
The receptionist typed my name into her computer underneath her fluorescent yellow fingernails. She passed a sheet of paper over to me. I looked at the piece of paper.
“Sign right here”
I stared
She looked more and more uncomfortable
I stared
She let out a nervous laugh as if she dealt with people like me everyday.
I continued to stare.
She got more nervous.
“Oh for God’s Sake”
My mother glared at me
I got the hint and signed the paper
“Alright then”
The woman looked relieved.
“You have to say goodbye now”
My mother and father turned to me and almost harmoniously said
“Do as your told”
I loved how they still treated me like I was twelve.
“Yeah, okay”
I grabbed my suitcases and followed the receptionist through a heavy door into the treatment center.
CHAPTER 2:
The woman began to ramble off the rules of the center.
“If you are caught using you will be asked to leave”
“No unsupervised fraternization with the male guests”
I wondered when I would get the first opportunity to leave.
We stopped in front of another heavy wooden door.
“And here is your room”
I stared
“Well let’s go inside”
I stood for a moment, and then drug my bags in after me.
“This is your roommate Darcy”
I stared at Darcy
She stared back at me
“Hi”
“Hi…”
“Well I will just let you to get to know each other”
The heavy wooden door slammed behind us.
I noticed an empty space over in the corner by a window
A twin sized bed and a plain wooden nightstand and an old wooden dresser sat in my corner.
I frowned and walked over to my bed. I dropped my bags in my area and turned towards Darcy, I don’t think she had even taken her eyes off me.
“Hey”
She sat there. I suddenly realized how I made people felt. I got an instant feeling of gratitude in my stomach. I already decided that I loved Darcy. After a few tense moments of silence Darcy spoke.
“What do you use?”
“Coke”
“You?”
“Same”
We both smiled. All of a sudden a school like bell rung throughout the clinic.
“Time to get out meds”
I followed Darcy out of our room. The hallways winded until we reached the nurses station. The nurse’s station was located in the “ TV room.” I stood in line fingering my long black hair waiting to get my med’s. I turned around curiously examining the room.
“Hey”
The voice was deep and warm. My eyes turned to a man that looked to be in his twenties. From what I could see his arms were illustrated with art, and his face covered in rings.
“Hey”
“My names Benji”
I stood for a minute thinking whether or not I should take his extended hand.
“Lilly”
I said taking Benji’s hand into mine
I was surprised to see that even his hands were covered with tattoos.
The nurse behind the counter was standing on her tiptoes to get a better view of us. Apparently this didn’t fall into the category of proper fratnization. I quickly released his hand and turned forward. I advanced towards the counter and grabbed my cup of drugs. I assumed that they were all apart of the detoxification process. I swallowed the pills and stuck out my tongue and opened my mouth wide to show the nurse that I had swallowed like I was supposed to. She looked offended, I guess you only do that in the movies. I heard Benji laugh behind me. A quickly smiled and turned away from the nurses station.
“Bye”
Benji whispered.
The nurse continued to stare at me. I quickly smiled and began examining the TV room.
